Lu'au's on Kauai

Best Kauai Luau, Kauai Menu Magazine, Hula

Drama Dance
(Hula-o-lapa)

Let us dance the lore of the sea currents and cloud-forms,
How they meet, move and separate.
Let us dance how the stars and waves appear,
And the course of the wind as it froths the waters.
Let us dance to the motions of the leaves and blossoms
Swaying in a particular wind.
Let us move like dancing trees, swimming fish and shifting clouds.
Let us dance as filtered light, in the sea,
in the forests and the shadows that it casts.
Let us dance was we were told by Ali'i-wahine-o-kamalo (The shadow on the moon.)
Let us dance the way of Ku and Hina.
Let us dance the way to tell the stories we were taught by La'amaikahiki, Maluaka, Kilinoe and Paliula.
Let us dance on the land and by the sea for all life and love.
O' Laka, inspire us!

Sound the conch...beat the kaeke drum...light the torch, begin the lu'au.
Come perform the Hula...let us dance.

The hula has been Hawaii 's theater, an accompaniment to poetry. Usually dedicated to the goddess Laka, it is a part of the rites honoring gods and chiefs as well as the way to pass on the ancestral heritage and folklore. At one time it has also been a form of courtship and wooing. Men's hula is dynamic and active, women's gentle and flowing. The hula is an integral part to any lu'au and festivity. Hawaiian culture is rich in history, beauty and romance. There is not a better way to experience, celebrate and share in this unique society than to participate in a lu'au. Here are the very best:

As the day comes to a gentle close, the haunting call of a conch shell and a melodic Hawaiian chant carry over the golden sands and sapphire seas of Kauai 's south shore, announcing the arrival of something very special. Representing the monarchs of old Hawaii, a royal court enters in a procession reminiscent of ancient times, here you will experience a touch of Hawaii 's heritage, history, folklore and pageantry.

Upon arrival, guests are warmly welcomed with beautiful shell leis and can have their photograph taken with the golden crescent of Poipu Beach as the breathtaking backdrop. While sipping a refreshing mai tai and enjoying the Hawaiian music played by the "Na Kapu Mele" trio, guests can stroll among local artisans who teach lei making, wood carving, and coconut frond weaving.

The elaborate luau banquet features both traditional Hawaiian delicacies, such as fresh sweet pineapple, kalua pig, lomi salmon, pipikaula, poke and poi, as well as dishes that are inspired by the numerous ethnic foods that are enjoyed by the people of modern Hawaii, such as Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, Filipino and Thai-inspired cuisines. The feast is perfectly finished with desserts featuring tropical island flavors like guava chiffon pie, coconut coated haupia, pineapple upside down cake and chocolate macadamia nut cake.

Prior to the "E Pele E" Polynesian revue, a fashion show teaches the audience several techniques for tying the island sarong. Now, with darkness setting upon the luau grounds accented by the warm glow of tiki torches, guests are ready to delight in the sights and sounds of a Polynesian dance and song extravaganza hosted by local celebrity Dickie Chang and presented by Kapu Kinimaka-Alquiza's renowned Halau Hula O Kaohikukapulani . A winner of numerous awards at the Merrie Monarch Festival, (the premier invitation-only Hawaiian hula competition,) this hula troupe showcases traditional and modern dances of the Hawaiian and Pacific Islands in a truly authentic and awe inspiring presentation.
